Converting an Old Card Catalog Cabinet
for eReader Storage
So...like most libraries, we have a couple of unused card catalog cabinets, left over from the days of having to type little cards for each book in the library. They just sat in our office, taking up space. When we purchased Nooks for our school, we needed a way to organize them in an area for charging and storing when not in use. Voila! The card catalog cabinet! The cabinet works equally well for Nooks and Kindles, including the covers.
Many libraries have
card catalog cabinets sitting unused.
Ours are very nice looking, and it was a shame
to see them sitting empty. Now they have
a new life as eReader cabinets.
We found that both our Nooks and our Kindles fit in the drawers with their covers on.
A volunteer drilled holes in the back of each cabinet and attached sets of outlet strips. It's easy to thread the Nook charging cables through the holes. We'll then plug this into an outlet.  Maybe this isn't the best electrical solution, but it works for us. (Update - we reconfigured the back wiring so that 3 power strips connect to a separate outlet rather than all 6 connecting to one outlet. When all were connected to the same outlet, the Nooks were only partially charging. All now charge completely.)

We labelled the drawers, giving each set of 6 a collection name.

C.J. and Gloria are one of the first BJHS students to check out Nooks.
