Library Media Center FAQs

Q: How often do students visit the library media center?
A: All students in Grades K-5 have a 40 minute class period time. Also, students in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 have an extra 20 minute block of time for library book selection and check out.

Q: How often do students check out books?
A: Students check out books once a week. Please view  www.district87.org/bent/mediacenter and click on "Schedule".

Q: How many books do students check out?
A: Kindergarten and Grade 1 check out one book at a time.  Grades 2-5 check out two books at time. When students are allowed to check out two books, one book is within their lexile reading range and the other may be a free choice book. Students are encouraged to pick from a variety of genres.

Q: What do I do if my child loses a book?
A: Please contact the library media specialist (Ms. Riccio)  to find out the cost of the book  by calling 828-4315, emailing at ricciok@district87.org or send a note to school. It is your responsibility to pay for the cost of the book.

Q: What do I do if my child damages a book?
A: Please bring in the damaged book. In some cases the book can be repaired. Please do not attempt to glue or tape the book at home. We have special materials in the library for fixing books. If the book cannot be repaired to an acceptable state then you will be responsible for paying for the book.

Q: How often are books checked out for? Is there an overdue policy?
A: Books are checked out for one week. Students may renew materials. A book that is 30 days or more overdue will result in a letter to be mailed home. You will have two weeks from that notice to make arrangements to pay for the book or set up a payment plan. If after two weeks no arrangements have been made or there has been no response, a lunch detention will be issued.

*Any student with an outstanding balance at the end of the school year will not participate in Field Day.
