Pinch
Pot Whistles
Small sculptural whistles

Objective:
To create a sculptural, functional
whistle.
Supplies:
Clay and glaze.
Terms:
Craftsmanship-A
person who practices a craft with great skill; The
technique, style, and quality of working.
Decoration-The
act, process, technique, or art of decorating. Something that decorates or
adorns; an embellishment.
in the round or in-the-round - To be
viewed from all sides; freestanding. When referring to sculpture, a type
that is surrounded on all sides by
space. The opposite
of
relief.
texture - An
element of art which
refers to the
surface
quality or "feel" of
an
object, its
smoothness, roughness, softness, etc. Textures may be actual or
simulated. Actual
textures can be felt with the fingers, while simulated textures are
suggested by an artist in the
painting of different
areas of a
picture -- often in
representing drapery,
metal, rocks, hair, etc.
Examples of textures:

scoring
- To make scratches or creases in pieces of
clay to be
joined together.
Scoring and applying
slip to such
roughened
surfaces creates a
bond that holds the pieces together. If slip acts as an
adhesive, and scoring
makes two pieces of clay like the opposite sides of a zipper, their combined
action -- a zipped zipper with hardened adhesive inside -- should be
permanent.
pinch,
pinch-pot - Pinching is a
pottery
technique,
fundamental to
manipulating
clay. Making a
pinch-pot is pressing the thumb into a ball of clay, and drawing the clay
out into a pot by repeatedly squeezing the clay between the thumb and
fingers. Among their first adventures with clay, K-2 students should have
ample opportunities to make pinch-pots, the initial goals of which are: thin
walls (from center of bottom to the lip), a smooth inner
surface, and identity
marked on the underside.
slab construction - A
pottery
technique in which a
form is built up by
joining
shapes cut from thick
sheets of damp
clay. Also see
coil construction,
scoring,
pinch,
potter's wheel, and
slip.
