Objective:
To create a pleasing, colorful and interesting Jumping Jack character.
Supplies:
Sketchbook, Pencil, Eraser, Colored Pencils, Poster board, Paint, Brushes, String, and Brass Fasteners.
Vocabulary:
Puppet- a doll or figure representing a person or animal that is moved using the hands inside the figure or by moving rods, strings, or wires attached to it.
Marionette-The A jointed puppet manipulated from above by strings or wires attached to its limbs.
Hand Puppet-A small figure of a person or animal, having a cloth body and hollow head, designed to be fitted over and manipulated by the hand.
Jumping jack- a puppet whose arms and legs move when a string is pulled – usually these puppets only have 1 string.
Punch and Judy- or Punch-and-Judy show -a comic children’s puppet show featuring Punch and Judy, a quarrelsome couple, together with a number of other standard characters. “That’s the way to do it” Inventor of the slapstick.
Ventriloquist- a person who performs with a puppet and speaks or sings without moving their mouth or lips.
Craftsmanship/
Craftsman-A
person who practices a craft with great skill; The
technique, style, and quality of working. Having
a high degree of excellence. The quality of a thing tends to be increased
the more care its maker puts into its making.
Decoration-The act, process, technique, or art of decorating. Something that decorates or adorns; an embellishment.

Full Instructions
Step #1
Brainstorm an an idea for a jumping jack. Make a full sized sketch of your idea. Make the jumping jack a minimum size of 12 inches tall. Use colored pencils to decorate and embellish your jumping jack. Make sure that the jumping jack has lots of detail.
Step #2
Draw out the pieces of the jumping jack separate from each other. You should have 9 separate pieces.
Pieces:
1 Head and torso
2 Upper arm right side
3 Lower arm and hand right side
4 Upper arm left side
5 Lower arm and hand left side
6 Upper leg right side
7 Lower leg and foot right side
8 Upper leg left side
9 Lower leg and foot left side
Remember that the pieces will eventually overlap so make them at least one half inch longer. Note that in the diagram above that each of the pieces must overlap to accommodate the string and the pivot holes.
Step #3
Cut the pieces out and trace them on a piece of poster board. Arrange them so that you do not waist the poster board. Use scissors to cut the pieces out of the poster board.
Step #4
Paint the pieces. Make sure that you paint all the detail of your sketch on the finished cut out piece. You are also required to paint the back and edges of the jumping jack. Remember that this is more of a 3D artwork.
Step #5
Assemble all of the pieces. Use a hole punch to make the holes for the fasteners. Use the brass fasteners to the pieces together.
Step #6
Tie on the string and make sure that the jumping jack works.
