Step #2

Design "font" to communicate the aspect of the word. Sketch rough draft in pencil. Refine and enlarge for final composition.

Step #3

Use a rule, circle templates, French curves or other edges to create your original font. Create two copies of the font. One in black ink and the second in color using colored pencil.

Consider using tonal scale from light to dark with choice of colored pencil – main color first, then mix with light analogous, dark analogous, and complement. Review color wheel relationships and colored pencil techniques for layering, blending, and creating value.

Step #5

Finish final composition by adding color according to the assigned/selected "scheme".

Pictorial Step by Step Instructions

Step #1

Divide your sketchbook paper into a grid. Make each section 2 inches across and 3 inches down. Use pencil and draw very lightly. These lines will be erased later. You may only be able to get 8 or so sections on each page. Use as many pages as you need.

Step #2

Start drawing the letters in each of the sections. Make sure that the letters touch each side of the section.

All the "legs" (Widths) of the letters should be the same size. Check with your teacher for the correct measurement. Each lettering style should be consistent with the other letters.

Step #3

Use the figure-8 technique to construct all the letters except the ones with angular lines.

Step #4

Color and decorate the letters. Erase all guide lines completely. Do more than just color the letters. Be creative. Make sure that all the lines are sharp and clean, don't darken the lines without using a ruler.

Tips:

Make the lines as straight and clean as possible.

Be creative. Do more than just color your letters. A theme might help you come up with ideas.

Focus on craftsmanship!
