Part II Chapter 15:
Textbooks

At the start of each course, teachers will issue texts to students.  All such texts are to have a unique text number.  Either a class roster should be maintained which indicates the text issued (by number) to the student, or a system of index cards should be maintained.  At the time texts are issued, students should inspect the text and report any tears, profanity, or other damage.  It is desirable to have students actually initial the roster or the index card.

In addition, students should be directed to write their name, the current school year, AND THE CURRENT TEACHER’S NAME inside the front cover.  This will facilitate matters should the text be lost.

Periodically, teachers should conduct text checks that match text numbers against the roster/index cards.  It is desirable to do this once a quarter.  It is particularly important to do this just prior to the winter (December) vacation, and just prior to Memorial Day.  This can be done without loss of instructional time during a test.

Texts should be collected during the examination period each semester.  At this time, texts should be matched against the initial roster/index cards.  Students who do not have their texts should be informed that their name will be turned in for not having the textbook.  Students should be instructed that if they later find the text, they should return it in to the teacher, and if they cannot locate the teacher, they can turn it in to the main office.  They should be sure to have their name and the teacher’s name on the book when returning the book to the main office.  Departments with year-long courses, in which the students may change teacher at mid-year, can develop procedures that allow students to keep their texts.
