Part II Chapter 19:
Suicide Prevention

Any employee having any reason to believe a student is considering or threatening suicide is to contact an administrator or counselor immediately.  It is important to take notes on any conversations that involve or relate to at-risk students.  A copy of these notes should be provided at the time of the referral, or as soon thereafter as practical.  The school counselor will be responsible for maintaining records concerning the referral, steps taken, and follow-through.

The administrator or counselor will follow these steps specified in district regulations:

  • Meet with the student

  • Call the parent(s)/guardian(s) to arrange a meeting

  • Calls and meetings will be documented in writing with a copy sent to the parent(s)/guardian(s)

  • The parent(s)/guardian(s) will be advised that they can contact the health department or crisis team for assistance.  This will be included in the documentation in #3 above.

In cases where an employee believes a student is in imminent risk of suicide, the parent(s)/guardian(s) should be called immediately.
