Part II Chapter 2:
Absence Reporting by Teachers

  • Classroom teachers are to report student absences from class each period.  This will be done via the online Skyward system or by circling the name of any student who is listed on the class list by substitutes or Physical Education and Study Hall teachers who may not have access to the computer.

  • Students who are present for at least 1 minute of class should be marked present for attendance reporting.  Students who are tardy should be marked as such in the teacher’s records and should receive appropriate consequences.  Students should be referred to the Assistant Principals when they accumulate 3, 6, 9, or 12 tardies.  Three tardies make an unapproved absence.

  • Students who are absent for classroom field trips, school sponsored events, or school achievement testing should be marked absent.

  • If there is a change in the hourly attendance, the teacher can make the change via the computer up until 2:30 pm.  After that time changes should be reported to the attendance assistant immediately.  This can be done by notifying the attendance assistant directly by phone (ext 5112) or email (helmj@district87.org).

  • If the teacher finds it necessary to have class in a room other than their regularly scheduled room it is the teacher’s responsibility to report attendance.  The Student Affairs Office should be notified if a temporary room change will be made and a note signifying the temporary room change should be taped on the regular classroom door.

  • If a teacher is absent, the daily attendance list must be accessible to the substitute teacher.  When attendance is being done by computer, the switchboard/receptionist will provide the substitute teacher with an attendance list.

  • Teachers are responsible for taking the hourly attendance.  This responsibility is not to be delegated to students.

  • Morning white verification sheets must be signed and returned to the Student Affairs Office by the end of the first hour each day.  If changes need to be noted, the teacher should report these on the verification sheet before returning them.

  • If there are any questions concerning the attendance procedures, see the appropriate assistant principal or attendance office assistant.
