Part II Chapter 7: |
|
Teachers have a right and responsibility to maintain an environment conducive to learning. Teaches should establish a clear set of rules that are enforced by an increasing series of steps within their classrooms. Teachers have at their disposal the following options: conference with student, calls home, classroom detentions (usually after school), and lunch detentions.
It is expected that these steps will be tried before referrals are made to counselors or administrators. When these steps fail, a referral is appropriate. In general, if the teacher believes the cause of the problem is academic readiness, a family or peer problem, a referral to the counselor is appropriate. If a disciplinary follow up is warranted, a referral to the appropriate assistant principal should be made. Since referrals can be mailed to parents, teachers should exercise professional standards in writing accounts of situations. Administrators can assign a wider range of sanctions, including after school detentions, short-term removal from the classroom, permanent removal, Saturday detention, in-school detention, suspension, conditional probation, and a recommendation to the School Board for expulsion or placement in Alternative Education School. |
