Part III Chapter 4:
Determining Final Course Grades

The semester final grade is obtained from the two nine-week grades and the semester examination grade.  Each nine-week grade counts 2/5th of the semester final grade and the semester final examination grade counts 1/5th of the semester grade.  The determination of the semester final grade can be simplified by restating the problem as follows:

  1st 9 wks 2nd 9 wks Sem. Exam Final
Original Grade B C B
Restatement B+B C+C B B

The semester final grade is determined by using the RULE OF PREDOMINANCE.  However, a student, in order to obtain a passing final semester grade, must receive a passing grade in two of the three grading categories.

Special Circumstances:

Students will receive a failing grade for the semester in the following situations:

  • If the student fails to take the final exam, for the purposes of this rule, merely attending, but not completing the examination questions, does not constitute taking the final exam

  • If the student fails two quarters, or a quarter and the final

  • If the student is removed from class for disciplinary reasons or chronic absenteeism

  • If the student fails to demonstrate mastery of a significant course outcome (see below)

Exceptions to these situations require specific administrative approval.
