Exceptions to Final Course Averages

It sometimes happens that the average grade as determined above may not truly reflect the student’s achievement on the identified course outcomes.  The procedures below allow a teacher some flexibility in deviating from the course average.

 

Failure to master significant course outcomes:  The policy enumerated below under “Mastery Learning” authorizes a teacher to issue a semester grade lower than the average, or even to withhold all credit for a course despite an overall passing average when the student fails to master the significant course outcomes.  The policy provides for specific notification and warning to the parent.  (See Appendix A)

 

Cases where the student’s achievement exceeds the calculated average:  Sometimes a student’s achievement will exceed the calculated average.  Such situations can occur if a student is ill and performs poorly on a critical test, or performs atypically on the exam, or overcomes a poor start in the semester and remediates initial difficulties.  In these cases, a teacher should consult with the appropriate administrator who can authorize an override on the average.
