Part III Chapter 8:
Student Program Changes

Entering a Course in Mid-semester:  Ordinarily, student program changes will occur within the first ten days of a semester.  However, in some cases, exceptions may be made later.  In some cases, incoming transfer students may come from schools with different courses of study than BHS.  Teachers have the following options:

  • If the old course is similar to the new course in terms of difficulty, the teacher can simply take the transfer grade and accept it as the grade to date.  If the old course is easier or more difficult than the new course, the grade to date in the old course may not be a fair indicator.  In these cases, the teacher may administer a sampling of major quizzes, test, and other assignments to determine a more appropriate grade for work to date.  Another alternative is to simply consider the quality of work in the new course from the point of entry on.  In courses that sequentially build on prior learning, more complex skills assessed late in a course provide a basis for judgment about prior objectives that are subsumed in the later objectives.

Leaving a course in Mid-semester:  A student who withdraws from an individual class will be placed in a study hall and will lose credit for that class.  A student who withdraws from a class prior to the end of the first or third grading periods will have a “WP” (Withdraw Passing) or a “WF” (Withdraw Failing) placed in their permanent record.  Students are advised that “WP” and “WF” grades may be viewed negatively by some colleges and scholarship programs.  For example, a grade of “WF” is sometimes treated as an “F”. Some programs also look at the number of courses taken each year and may ask for an explanation if the number is unusually low.  A student who withdraws from a class after the end of the first or third grading periods will receive a grade of “F” for the entire semester.

Withdrawal from School or Transfer to Another School:  Any student who is withdrawing or transferring from Bloomington High School for any reason, should contact the counselor or guidance secretary five school days prior to the withdrawal date.  Students who are transferring to another school will receive a “grade to date” in those classes for which this information is available.
