Computer labs for
student use require careful supervision. Computers can be abused both
intentionally and unintentionally. The following procedures should help
minimize problems:
-
All students will be
given accounts and issued logins and passwords. These should be used
at all times.
-
Students should not
use school computers without supervision
-
Teachers should be
aware of the software being used by students and know the likely
designs and colors on the screen
-
Students should not
be permitted to play games on computers. If there is a specific
incentive program, only software specifically approved by the teacher
should be used. Software should not be brought by the students from
home.
-
Federal copyright
laws need to be adhered to. Software licenses should be filed with
the department’s lead teacher. If a license is not available, a copy
of the purchase order or invoice usually will suffice.
-
Classroom rules
should be established and communicated to students. This should
include the expectation that students initially inspect their
workstation and report problems immediately to the teacher. Students
found “experimenting” should receive progressive disciplinary steps.
Bringing software from home, changes to the operating system,
accessing pornographic Internet sites are serious and should be
reported to the appropriate Assistant Principal. Erasing or copying
another student’s files without authorization may be inadvertent or
intentional. If there is any question, the student should be warned,
with the warning documented. Any subsequent violation would clearly
not be inadvertent. Cheating on the computer by presenting the work
of another, as one’s own should be treated as any other form of
cheating.
-
No food or drink
should be allowed
-
All computer
installation is to be coordinated with the Technology Department, even
if the equipment is donated or installed by an outside vendor or
volunteer. This will facilitate repairs.
Computer Repairs:
Teachers should try initial checking before reporting repair problems.
This includes checking that cables are connected, that a print-sharing
device is not locked on a different computer, and in the event of a
lockup (that last 5 minutes), or when data has been saved by turning the
computer, printer, etc, off and rebooting. If this doesn’t work,
contact the lead teacher who will write down the problem, the computer
location, and any other helpful information and place in the Technology
mailbox. This information can be e-mailed to
help@district87.org.
Use of labs in other
departments:
BHS has computer labs for instructional purposes.
Teachers should sign up to use labs (41, 43, 45, 133, and 19) by
contacting the Technology Department. Procedures developed by the
Technology Committee should be followed at all times. Teachers should
notify the Technology Department of any repair problems.
Summer Use:
Teachers
may sign out computers for summer use. A form for this purpose will be
available from the Principal’s office each year in late May.
