Students should not include classes
from other institutions in their planning for high school
graduation. All
requests for enrollment in these classes must be discussed with
the counselor first.
A written request should then be submitted to the
counselor who will forward the request to the administration for
a decision. Juniors
and seniors may be permitted to enroll in a single half-credit
course per semester during the school year if this will permit
them to graduate with their original graduation class.
Students can attend summer school to take up to two
credits of course work.
Courses taken to accelerate graduation will be
scrutinized carefully.
In all
cases, students must obtain prior approval from Bloomington High
School to transfer in credit from the outside institution. The
outside institution must be accredited by its state and regional
accrediting agency.
The outside institution must agree to provide a transcript
indicating the unit(s) of high school credit awarded and a
course description.
A course syllabus and table of contents from the textbook may be
required. In some
cases, students may be required to show mastery on the course
final exam. Such courses may meet specific BHS graduation
requirements only if the course outline matches the District 87
Course Outcomes/Syllabus for the required course.
Courses may meet elective requirements if the course
matches or is substantially similar to content from one of the
instructional areas in the BHS curriculum.
Cumulatively, no more than one unit of credit can be earned
through correspondence courses. Correspondence courses must be
sponsored by an accredited college or university and a BHS
supervisor must be available.
Similarly, no more than one unit of credit can be earned
through the Illinois Virtual High School (IVHS).
In addition, enrollment in an IVHS course must have
administrative approval and all fees/tuition are the
responsibility of the student/parent.
Students
may be admitted to specific Regional Alternative Education
classes on a space-available basis in accordance with this
policy. Students
would be liable for any tuition charges that would apply.
Students who need to make up courses failed due to
unapproved absences or disruptive behavior will not be
accommodated until all other requests for Alternative Education
classes have been met.
Second-semester seniors who are given
permission to take courses through these channels must have
grades confirmed to the guidance office two school days prior to
graduation in order to be eligible to march with their class.
