Medical Excuses from PE Classes

Excuses for one to three
days: A student who needs to be excused from
physical education for one or two days must bring a note from the parent
or guardian. The note may
be confirmed by telephone.
The student is to bring the note to the nurse for approval before
physical education class and will attend class.
The student is required to dress for class, but will not have to
participate. If the class
is involved in a required activity, the student may be required to make
up the activity at a later date.
Short‑term medicals (nine weeks or less):
The nurse will confirm the verification from the physician, and
the student will continue to go to class.
When authorized by the physician, the student will participate
subject to whatever limitations the physician specifies.
The physician should be specific about activities that the
student is to avoid.
Long‑term medicals (more than nine weeks):
Students with long‑term medical excuses from physical education
classes must bring a letter of verification from their physician to the
school nurse on the first day of school, or as soon as possible
following a diagnosis. The
student will attend regular physical education class subject to the
procedures for short-term medical situations until a program change to
adaptive physical education is effective.
