Step #1

Take a piece of 8 x 11 tag board and grid it with 1/2 inch lines. Use lettering to design a type face. Altered the type in at least two ways from the lettering assignment. On your tag board draw your name, nick name or some word that identifies the sketchbook to you and other using 4 to 6 letters.

Step #2

Cut 2 strips of tag board 11 x 1.  Cut two strips of book tape 11" long.  Lay the book tape on its back and wet the strip with water.  Align a strip of tag board with 1 edge of the tape and press it down.  lay the cover, upside down next to the strip, covering the remaining tape.  Leave a 1/16" space between the two.  Make sure that the top of the strip and the top of the cover are even.  Repeat with the second strip and tape and a blank cover piece of tag board.

Step #3

When the tape is dry, again the two covers like a book and trim off any excess tape.  Flip the covers upside down.  Centered on the strip, punch two holes, 6" apart.  Put the covers back together and be sure the two sets of holes are aligned.

 Step #4

Punch corresponding holes in 10-12 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 paper.  Put the book together and align all holes.

Full Instructions

Step #1

Draw your initials in block letters on the back cover of the sketchbook. Make sure that the letters are at least 4 inches tall and 3/4 of an inch thick. Use pencil and draw very lightly. These lines will be erased later.

Step #2

Draw 10-14 vertical lines. Space the lines out so that they cover the width of the sketchbook cover. The line can be straight or wavy. Draw right through the letters. Again, use pencil and draw very lightly. These lines will be erased later.

Step #3

Draw 8-11 horizontal lines. Space the lines out so that they cover the width of the sketchbook cover. The line can be straight or wavy. Draw right through the letters. Again, use pencil and draw very lightly. These lines will be erased later.

Step #4

Start to color each of the small sections that were created by the lines and the block letters.

To make the letters contrast, use a different color scheme in the letters. For example: Use warm colors for the letters and cool colors for the background.

Don't use the same color in adjacent sections.( A color can't be used right next to the same color.)

Make sure that all colors are opaque, the lines between the sections are sharp and clean, and the sections are completely filled in.

Focus on craftsmanship!
