17th Consecutive Playoff appearance |
The 2003 season will be remembered as one of the best in school history for several reasons. The most obvious being the Raiders 2nd consecutive, third overall, finish as state runner-up. But the milestones reached by this team go beyond just getting to the championship game. The 2003 Raiders became the first team in school history to score a touchdown (four total) in a state championship game. They were the first team in school history to defeat the champions of the dreaded Chicago Catholic League. They were the first champions of the newly combined Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 split into two divisions (east and west) in 1983, but combined again this season. They were only the second team in school history, first since 1987, to defeat the Ironmen of Normal Community twice in the same season. Running the overall winning steak over Community to five consecutive games. In addition, the team as well as several individuals rank very high historically in several statistical categories, as you will see below. The best part of all, is that no one expected the 2003 Raiders to be this good. Overachieving is a great thing.
