URBANA -- Technically, Friday night's Big 12
Conference championship clinching, 58-6 victory over
Urbana High School's football team was the 101st career
triumph for Bloomington coach Rigo Schmelzer.
The 100th came Thursday when the Illinois High School
Association Board of Directors upheld the ruling of its
executive director that Decatur Eisenhower must forfeit
its 14-12 win over BHS Sept. 26 because Eisenhower used
an ineligible player.
"It (the 100th) is tonight," said Schmelzer, who --
at 101-22 over 11 seasons -- prefers his victories come
on the field. "This is a win. This is something the
staff and I have achieved so it's a real W."
The outcome extended Bloomington's real long regular
season winning streak to 43 games ahead of tonight's
playoff pairing announcements.
The result gave the Class 6A No. 9-ranked Purple
Raiders their fourth straight Big 12 title at 8-0 and
pushed their overall record to 9-0.
BHS star James Wade didn't play the second half when
the clock ran continuously because of the Raiders' 48-0
halftime lead, but he still finished with 184 yards and
four touchdowns on 10 carries. He scored on runs of 6,
75, 6 and 32 yards.
Wade "turned" his knee on his third touchdown and sat
out the next series. He said he expects to be OK.
Wade believes the IHSA's ruling didn't change how the
Raiders played, but did change how they felt.
"Our heart goes out to (Eisenhower)," he said. "They
earned that win. We were really looking forward to
seeing them in the playoffs and proving ourselves. It
didn't affect how we came out and played. It did give us
the confidence to get that conference championship by
ourselves. We're real happy about that."
Teammate Brandon Hughes turned three Jeremy Peden
passes into touchdown receptions of 16, 29 and 67 yards
to reach 112 total.
"Before my third touchdown, he (Peden) told me, 'I
want my 100 yards,'" Hughes said. "He said 'I'm just
going to throw it up.' I told him 'I'm going to drop
it,' but I caught it."
Peden, who was 4 of 9 for 122 yards, scored 10 points
on six point-after kicks and one 21-yard field goal.
"I think our execution the last three weeks has been
good," Schmelzer said. "Our ability to play against
(heavier) opponents in the playoffs is going to depend
upon that."
The Raider receivers were instrumental blockers in
Wade's 75-yard touchdown run, which was part of a
28-point first quarter explosion.
"They've always done that," Wade said. "I'm never
surprised. Brandon and Adrian (Arrington) get out there
and block really well. I make sure I set it up for them.
They'll catch eye contact with me when we're running."
University of Illinois recruit Justin Harrison of BHS
added 105 yards on six carries as the Raiders gained 541
total yards to 210 for the Tigers.
BHS also saw reserve Jeremy Byrd score on a 4-yard
run. Teammate Donald Brown had an interception and the
Tigers lost three fumbles.
The Raiders had six scoring drives of five plays or
less.
"They are not as big as they've been in the past, but
they are quicker," said Urbana coach Alec Anderson after
his team's fifth straight loss to BHS.
Urbana (3-6, 3-5) avoided the shutout with a 78-yard
touchdown pass from Preston Williams to Antonio Adams
against the BHS reserves with 51 seconds left.
