Peden, Bloomington return to win column

BLOOMINGTON -- Bloomington High School quarterback Jeremy Peden's chances of outgunning Danville's Tyler Blue weren't particularly good with Blue residing in a deep shotgun formation and having five wide receivers at his disposal every snap.

Yet Peden and the Purple Raiders were all about efficiency Friday at Fred Carlton Field. Make that explosive efficiency.

Peden needed just five completions to pass for 160 yards and BHS scored five touchdowns of 20 yards or more as the Raiders handled Danville, 33-12, in Big 12 Conference action.

BHS moved to 5-1 overall and in the Big 12 after having its 38-game regular season win streak snapped last week. The Raiders are tied with Normal Community atop the Big 12 with Mattoon and Champaign Centennial at 4-1.

"We came back out after last week's tough loss and showed everybody in the community we're still the Raiders and no one can hang with us," Peden said. "Last week was a fluke."

BHS faced 50 Danville passes and the Vikings ran 33 more plays from scrimmage. But the Raiders still posted a 391 to 299 advantage in total offense and held Blue to 150 yards through the air.

"I thought the kids responded well. We had to practice against a five-wide set which we don't often see," said BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer. "We felt we were effective when we needed to be. Our strength has to lie in being balanced and diversified."

After Danville (2-4, 2-4) decided not to punt on its first possession and a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, BHS immediately struck as Peden found Brandon Hughes for a 40-yard touchdown pass on the Raiders' first play from scrimmage. Peden kicked the extra point.

"I was feeling it. I felt good throwing it and the receivers were catching it," Peden said. "It really balances out the offense."

Chuck Green ran 4 yards for a Danville touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, but the Vikings trailed 7-6 when the extra point kick veered wide left.

BHS needed just three plays to respond as Justin Harrison sailed through the middle and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown. Harrison finished with 91 yards rushing on 11 carries and two receptions for 81 yards.

James Wade motored down the left sideline for a 51-yard touchdown at the 2:05 mark of the second quarter and BHS led 21-6 at halftime. Wade pushed his season rushing total to 1,068 yards by covering 119 yards on 15 attempts.

"It just breaks my heart," Danville coach Mark Dodd said. "We defended their option fairly well. The one thing we knew we had to not allow happen happened. They got five big plays and that was the difference. Aside from that, we played them dead even."

Peden dumped a short third-quarter pass over the middle to Harrison, who turned it into a 55-yard touchdown.

"He's a big playmaker," Peden said. "I like to get the ball in his hands so he can do something with it."

Wade capped the BHS scoring on a 20-yard TD run.

Blue proved slippery while scrambling out of the shotgun with 113 yards on 20 carries.
