Purple Raiders' win
streak stopped at 39

DECATUR -- The last time the Decatur Eisenhower
football team beat Bloomington was way back in 1995.
Since then, the Panthers had lost seven straight
times -- by wide margins -- to the Purple Raiders, who
had won their last 39 regular-season games.
But Friday night was different. The Panthers scored
first and last to earn a 14-12 Big 12 Conference
victory, the same margin as eight years ago.
"These kids' reaction to the loss was disappointment.
They were all hurt by it," said BHS coach Rigo
Schmelzer, whose team, ranked fifth in Class 6A, fell to
4-1 overall and in the conference. "This is just
something they'll have to learn from.
"The defense had a hard time stopping what Eisenhower
was doing. A lot of it was field condition and what
Eisenhower was doing."
The Panthers' Danny Knight put his team on the
scoreboard first when he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass
from quarterback Brent Miller in the opening period. The
extra point was blocked.
Bloomington then tied the score on an 8-yard run by
Shane Schubbe. The kick failed, leaving the score tied a
6-6 heading into the second quarter.
Neither team scored again until BHS' James Wade, who
finished the night with 252 yards rushing on 29 carries,
got loose for a 63-yard TD run in the third quarter. But
the hosts got a 1-yard run from Miller early in the
fourth quarter and Jamie Taylor ran the ball in for a
two-point conversion and the deciding points.
The ball then changed hands several times before BHS
moved from its own 5-yard line to Eisenhower's 39 with
29 seconds left. But the Purple Raiders fumbled -- one
of four lost fumbles on the night -- and Eisenhower
recovered and ran out the clock.
"The conditions took away our skills," Schmelzer
said. "It still comes down to execution. With all of the
turnovers, we hurt ourselves. You have to give
Eisenhower credit.
"(The streak) was a great run and it was a lot of
fun."
Brent Holtz had two fumble recoveries for BHS.
Eisenhower improved to 2-3, 2-3.
