Victory puts BHS at No. 6

Bloomington High School moved up from No. 10 to No. 6 in Class 6A in the latest Associated Press football poll thanks to a come-from-behind win against Normal Community Friday in the annual Intercity Tripleheader at Hancock Stadium.

The loss dropped the Ironmen out of the rankings according to a panel of sportswriters. NCHS was No. 8 before the loss to the Purple Raiders.

In the win, BHS extended its regular-season winning streak to 36 straight games.

LeRoy remained No. 1 in Class 1A while Tremont moved up one spot to No. 8 in Class 2A, Prairie Central stayed at No. 8 in Class 4A and Pontiac was at No. 6 in Class 5A.

Two weeks into the season, Chicago Mount Carmel finds itself in an unusual position.

The Caravan, the defending Class 6A champions and traditional state power, fell to Evanston 30-27 in overtime and dropped from No. 3 to tenth in The Associated Press poll released on Monday.

Mount Carmel lost when Jody Ellis had a six-yard touchdown catch in overtime to give Evanston the stunning win.

The upset was even more surprising considering Evanston's past record. In the last three years, the Wildkits are a combined 7-20.

"I don't ever want to feel this way again," Mount Carmel lineman Luke Thara said.

All of last week's top teams won over the weekend, with Lockport No. 1 in 8A, Hubbard in 7A, Mundelein Carmel in 6A, Rochelle in 5A, Addison Driscoll in 4A, Wilmington in 3A, Carthage in 2A and LeRoy in 1A.

Downers Grove South, ranked No. 3 in 8A last week, dropped out of the poll after losing to 21-14 to Hinsdale Central.

It was the first regular season loss for Downers Grove South since Sept. 7, 2001 when Joe Bozich ran for a 49-yard touchdown with 2:48 remaining. The Red Devils' defense, led by Drew Levy, Doug Pilcher, Greg Johns, Mike Wilson and Bobby Zwolinski up front, limited running back Erick Newman to 55 yards on 19 carries.

"We played tough team defense. That's what we do," Levy said.
