ST.
LOUIS -- Senior running back James Wade ran for 195
yards, breaking the school career rushing record, and
scored two touchdowns to lead Bloomington High School
past St. Louis University High, 27-20, in a
nonconference football game Friday night.
The victory pushed the Raiders, ranked No. 9 in Class
6A, to 7-1. St. Louis U High fell to 5-2.
Wade broke the mark set by Dion Brown with a 44-yard
touchdown romp, his second score of the game, in the
third quarter, pushing the running back's total over
3,400 yards in his career. It also gave the Raiders a
21-7 lead.
Wade had 31 carries in the game.
BHS grabbed a 14-0 lead at halftime on a 47-yard pass
from quarterback Jeremy Peden to Justin Harrison in the
first quarter to complete a 49-yard, three-play drive. A
21-yard scoring run by Wade in the second period
culminated a short 36-yard drive.
On their first possession of the contest, the Raiders
drove 66 yards in 14 plays only to give up the ball on
downs on the St. Louis U High 11-yard line.
The Raiders gained 226 yards on offense in the first
half compared to just 61 for St. Louis U High.
St. Louis U High scored 13 points in the third period
to pull to within 21-13 on touchdown throws of 30 and 15
yards from quarterback Matt Behr to John Warner.
Behr managed seven completions in 20 attempts for the
Junior Billikens for 143 yards with one interception.
A 1-yard touchdown plunge by Harrison early in the
final period pushed the advantage to 27-13 for the
Raiders. The score was set up after a time-consuming
11-play, 69-yard drive that lasted from the end of the
third quarter into the fourth period.
However, with 1:48 remaining, St. Louis U High
blocked a BHS punt and Gary Eshelback returned the ball
30 yards for a touchdown as the Junior Bilikens climbed
to within 27-20.
St. Louis U High attempted an onsides kick, but the
ball went out of bounds, giving BHS possession. The
Raiders were able to run out the clock.
Harrison had 62 yards rushing on 14 carries. Peden
finished with six completions in 14 attempts for 143
yards with no interceptions.
