Week 3 Intercity game previews
Brief previews of today’s football games involving teams from Bloomington-Normal Danville vs. BloomingtonTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Fred Carlton Field, Bloomington Records: Danville 1-1, 1-1 in Big 12 Conference; Bloomington 1-1, 1-1 FYI: Bloomington tries to bounce back from last week’s 47-35 loss to rival Normal Community in the Intercity Doubleheader. The Purple Raiders, ranked No. 6 in the Class 6A state poll, have an eight-game winning streak against Danville dating back to 1997. BHS guard Chris Love is out with a foot injury and will be replaced by Ben Ehrlich. Quoting: “They graduated 10 seniors off a playoff team and had a three-year quarterback. The first two games their quarterback has not looked to throw too much. They use their speed to blitz on defense and try to spread the field offensively. If they go to a power game, it goes to our advantage.” — BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer Champaign Central vs. Normal WestTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Normal West High School Records: Champaign Central 1-1, 1-1 in Big 12 Conference; West 1-1, 1-1 FYI: Both teams are feeling better about themselves after last week’s performances. Normal West rolled past Decatur Eisenhower 49-0 thanks to 291 yards rushing and four touchdowns from Darius Bell, while Champaign Central snapped a six-game losing streak by thumping Urbana 49-6. West offensive guard/linebacker Luke McClintock (knee) is probably out for the season, while guard Tony Salvator will miss tonight’s game with back spasms. Quoting: “They’re very aggressive. They fly to the football. They’re not very big, but they’re very athletic. They get after it. I’m happy with Jordan Jefferson, our quarterback. He made a lot of strides from week one to week two, from reading his keys to running the huddle.” — West coach Darren Hess Rantoul vs. Central CatholicTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Bill Hundman Memorial Field, Bloomington Records: Rantoul 1-1, 1-1 in Corn Belt Conference; Central Catholic 2-0, 2-0 FYI: Central Catholic, ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A state poll, is playing its home opener and seeks its third 3-0 start in the last four years against Rantoul, which is coming off a 34-20 victory over Olympia. The Eagles are led by halfback Taveria Lawrence, who has gained 224 yards and scored three touchdowns. Central Catholic will be without tailback Pat McNeil (concussion) and linebacker David Murray (hamstring). Quoting: “They have some very good athletes on their team. Lawrence is very good. They run the ball well. They do some shotgun stuff and other things. Our defense has to be able to play both of them. We haven’t had to do that yet. Our defense has been very solid, and we thought that would be the case.” — Central Catholic coach Bobby Moews Normal Community vs. UrbanaTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Urbana High School Records: NCHS 2-0, 2-0 in Big 12 Conference; Urbana 0-2, 0-2 FYI: Normal Community, ranked No. 1 in the Class 6A state poll, figures to have a romp against Urbana. The Tigers have been outscored 70-6 in their first two games, while NCHS has stretched its winning streak to 16. NCHS guard Brandon Caldwell remains out for a couple more weeks with a kneecap injury. Quoting: “Our guys understand that we still make too many mistakes in the kicking game, and defensively we’re still unsettled as far as our lineup goes. We’re looking at a couple changes on defense this week. It’s so early in the year we’re still a work in progress.” — NCHS coach Hud Venerable Rochester vs. University HighTime: 7:45 p.m. today Place: Hancock Stadium, Normal Records: Rochester 2-0, 2-0 in Corn Belt Conference; U High 1-1, 1-1 FYI: University High will be looking to crank up its running game after gaining only 47 yards on the ground in last week’s 19-7 loss to Central Catholic. The big task for the Pioneers defensively against Rochester, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, will be to control Wil Lunt. The senior quarterback has thrown for 813 yards in two games, including a school-record 420 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s 49-14 victory over Eureka. Quoting: “You know they’re going to make completions and move the ball. The key is not to give up big plays and keep them in front of you. Offensively, we have to do a better job controlling the line of scrimmage.” — U High coach Kurt Olson |
