Deceiving Strength
Sara Staley
her eyes were brown like chocolate
her waist and hips were too thin to be beautiful
the days pass by long and weary with waiting
she has asked when the day will come
when she can fall and fall and let go
her strength is obvious with each stride
as she swims through the comments and stares
as she sweeps her face clean of muck and depression
that slipped unwillingly into her life
all is well she lies with her coy smile
his hand extends towards hers
his gaze is fierce and quickens her heart
her will unravels as she finds herself enchanted
her heart slowly surfaces and sits on her arm
she is dangerously vulnerable but his eyes show trust
she spins and twirls on the dance floor
his arms are warm and his smile sweet
his head leans forward and he whispers in her ear
she sighs in awe as she looks up at this miracle
with a whirl he steers her towards the exit
without a doubt she falls and fallls and doesn’t let go
yet at the last moment he looks over his shoulder
and with a wink the mocking crowd watches
her fall and fall as he lets go
