Applied science and technology at BJHS is an exploratory program introducing students to various technologies through a modular system of instruction.  The modular system is a self-guided, self-directed form of instruction that allows students to work cooperatively to accomplish learning activities.  Instruction media include: computer programs, projects, reading assignments, video instruction, and work sheets.  Students will also receive an introduction to the computer network used throughout the district and they will set up an account on the network.   They will receive instruction on how to navigate and manage their account.  Students will also receive an introduction to the Microsoft Office applications.

8th Grade Course Outline

The following course outline is used for the Bloomington Junior High School computer class that was introduced in the fall of the 2000-2001 school year.  The course is offered to eighth grade students as a fourth rotation in the Arts for Life area.  The course is a nine-week class that introduces students to basic computer skills and terminology.  The course introduces students to the Microsoft Office 2000 suite that includes instruction in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and a self-guided typing program.  It is the intent of the instructors to give students exposure to computer technology that will make them successful at the high school and in the job market.  All projects will be saved to individual student portfolios.  Students will be required to acquire email accounts for the purpose of sending and receiving email.  Student projects will be posted to a class web page that will enable students and parents to see their work on the World Wide Web.

All project-based assignments will be evaluated by teacher and peer rubrics.  Keyboarding will be evaluated for speed, accuracy, and technique.

Introduction to Microsoft Word and Excel using tutorials and project assignments.  Continue to use typing program.

Teacher and peer evaluation based on completion of assignment, effort, and inclusion of required elements.

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint using tutorial and project assignment.  Students will be required to include sound and graphics in their presentation.  Students are required to use hyperlinks in their presentations.

7-9

Project presentation that demonstrates incorporation of all applications previously introduced.  Students will be introduced to digital video camera and include video in their presentations.

Graduation by exhibition.  Students will present projects for teacher and peer evaluation.  Projects will be posted to class web page. Teacher and peer evaluation based on completion of assignment, effort, design quality, and inclusion of required elements.
