BJHS Courtyard Fountain and
Wildlife Habitat
Bloomington Jr. High’s courtyard is getting a
new look! In early October, a pondless waterfall was added to the
courtyard as the first step in a renovation that will be completed
over the next 18 months. The school’s Jr. Master Gardeners club is
working towards having the courtyard certified as a Schoolyard
Wildlife Habitat
through the National Wildlife Federation. The waterfall will
provide a water source for birds and other animals.

8J and 8H Students Visit the Challenger Learning Center

A group of 8J and 8H students
visited the Challenger Learning Center in Bloomington, accompanied by
science teachers Mr. Jett and Mrs. Huffaker. Prior to the visit, the
students completed an in-depth study of the planet Mars and space
travel. For the video, a special software program was used which enables
the insertion of images behind the students (much like a TV weather
forecast). The video was broadcast over our school network as a "news
report". (Note: this video is 17mb - very large - visit the link above
for assistance in viewing the video, if needed.) |

began in December 2001. Over 1,000 pinwheels have been dispersed from
San Diego, CA, Los Angeles, CA, to Bali, Indonesia, Baghdad, Iraq, New
York City, NY, and back again with astounding success. Visit the link

Hermanitas Mentoring Program
The BJHS
Hermanitas program is the
first of its kind in the area. This program is part of
the MANA de McLean County organization, which stands for Mexican
American National (women’s) Association, and is composed of Latinas from
the community. The Hermanitas,
or little sisters, program pairs an adult mentor with a jr. high
student. The mentors come from all walks of life, from women working for
insurance companies to college professors. The goals of the program are
to promote health awareness, cultural awareness, educational achievement
and personal enrichment. They also work to encourage the development of
leadership qualities and to be a source for advocacy and proactive
community involvement. To view photos of the mentors and students,
visit our
Hermanitas web page. |
