Attendance

The wrestling season is from November 29th until March 12th.  All wrestlers, including those that are injured or ineligible, are expected to attend all practices during the season.  Due to the size of our team, not everyone will travel to away meets or tournaments.  You will be notified at practice if you are to travel with the team.

If you need to miss for any reason, your parent or guardian must send a note either before the absence or the first day you return to practice.  (If you know in advance you will be absent, the note should come in advance).  If you are sick and miss school during the day, then you cannot come to practice.  If you are late to school, or miss any part of the day for an appointment, then you need to get approval through the office to attend practice that day.  Failure to attend practice will result in the loss of opportunity to represent the team in competition.  Three or more absences may result in dismissal from the team.

Most practices start at 3:00 and end at 4:45.  Please be on time both arriving and departing practice.  Failure to have a ride at BJHS by 5 PM on a repeated basis, may result in removal from the team.  If you are late for a bus, you will not wrestle.  (You may miss the next opportunity to wrestle because you let the team down when you missed the bus.)

Conduct

School policies, athletic rules, and coaches’ directions are expected to be followed at all times.  Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated under any circumstances.  Infractions may lead to suspension or removal from the team.

Eligibility

Based on BJHS Student Handbook

 Practice

Wrestlers should wear clean shorts and a t-shirt with their last name (if possible) on the back for practice.  Sweatpants are OK, if preferred to shorts.  Only wrestling shoes should be worn on the mats.  We will also be doing conditioning exercises off the mats, so wrestlers should also bring running shoes to practice every day.  No jewelry of any kind should be worn while wrestling.  No gum or food is permitted on the mats.  If a wrestler fails to follow guidelines or coaches instructions, then they will have to be picked up early from practice and it will count as an unexcused absence.

Meets/Tournaments

Wrestlers should wear purple shorts or sweatpants and a BJHS t-shirt or sweatshirt.  Wrestlers are expected to stay together as a team throughout the competition.  At most meets we will have a bench area that the parents will need to stay out of.  At most tournaments, we will set up an area in the bleachers that the parents are welcome to join us in.

All wrestlers are expected to attend and assist with home meets (this includes non-participating wrestlers).  Wrestlers are not permitted to leave until the coaching staff dismisses the team.  Wrestlers are not allowed to ride home with anyone other than their parents/guardians.  If a wrestler is not going to ride home on the bus, then their parent/guardian needs to inform the coach in person and sign their child out.

Weight Management

Wrestlers are not permitted to cut weight; however, weight management is an integral part of wrestling.  Competition is divided into 19 weight classes (65,70,75,80,85,90.95,100,105,112, 119,126,135,145,155,167,185,215,275).  In order to wrestle at a particular weight class, the wrestler must weigh that weight or less.  For example, to wrestle 119 the wrestler must weigh 119.0 or less. Wrestlers will be put into a weight class based on their weigh in at the beginning of the season.  Most wrestlers will naturally lose weight as they get into shape. Some wrestlers will gain weight through muscle growth or just regular growth during the season.  At any point, the wrestler can change weight classes by simply notifying one of the coaches.  Once a wrestler notifies the coaching staff of their intended weight, then they are committed to making the weight.   If a wrestler fails to make weight, then they will not wrestle.  They may also be benched for the next competition.

Hygiene

Wrestlers need to wear clean (freshly washed) workout clothes every day.  Wrestlers should shower either before leaving practice/competition or immediately upon arriving at home.  (Shower before the sweat dries)  If we have any outbreaks of ringworm, staph, impetigo, or any other skin infections, then wrestlers will be required to shower before they leave practice.
