Cheryl Jackson, Vice President, is an attorney and currently a stay-at-home mother. Jackson was elected to serve a 4-year term on the Board of Education in 1997. She was re-elected in 2001 and in 2005. Jackson is an ISBE "Those Who Excel" Award Recipient. Email Cheryl Jackson
Joe Butcher is a Lieutenant for the Bloomington Police Department. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in May 2006 and was elected to serve a 4-year term in 2007. Butcher is a graduate of Bloomington High School. Email Joe Butcher
John Dirks is an attorney for State Farm Insurance Companies. Dirks was elected to serve a 4-year term in April 2001 and was re-elected in 2005. Dirks attended Bloomington Public Schools and is a graduate of Bloomington High School. Email John Dirks
Michael Harrison, Sr. is employed as a Procurement Specialist for State Farm Insurance Companies. Harrison is also employed by the Western Avenue Community Center as a street outreach worker, where he mentors and counsels at-risk youth. Millicent Roth is employed as an Auto Claim Representative for State Farm Insurance Companies. Roth was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board in September 2003 and was elected to serve a 4-year term in 2005. What are the responsibilities of the Board of Education?


The Board of Education is responsible for determining the policies which guide the operation of Bloomington Public Schools, District 87.

Responsibilities include:

            • enacts policy;

            • approves the curriculum, textbooks and educational services;

            • employs a Superintendent and other personnel, determines their

 compensation and dismisses personnel;

            • approves the budget, financial reports, audits, payment of obligations

and policies whereby the administration may formulate procedures, regulations

and other guides for the orderly operation of the District;

            • estimates and seeks to provide funds for the operation, support,

maintenance, improvement and extension of the school system;

            • provides for the planning, expansion, improvement, financing,

construction, maintenance, use and disposition of physical plants of the School

District;

             • evaluates the educational program to determine the effectiveness

with which the schools are achieving the educational purpose of the District;

             • requires the establishment and maintenance of records, accounts,

archives, management methods and procedures considered essential to the

efficient conduct of school business; and

            • provides for the dissemination of information relating to the schools

necessary for creating a well-informed citizenry.
