Teresa Koehler, Patty Jensen and Jan Couillard recently won WHOI's “One Class at a Time,” $1000 grant on April 5.
The money will be used to purchase twenty-four Family Involvement Kits from Leap Frog Schoolhouse for their kindergarten classes. The classroom teachers will then be able to loan those kits to families to facilitate the necessary home school partnerships and to enable parents to enrich the school curriculum at home, so that student attitudes towards academics improve and literacy experiences increase.
Congratulations to Bloomington High School lead Foreign Languages teacher, Melissa Brown for receiving the Bloomington Normal Education Alliance's "Minority Educator of the Year Award." Brown, who has been teaching Spanish at BHS for fifteen years, won the award based on her significant interpersonal relationships with students and fellow staff, her outstanding personal characteristics and her professional achievements. Congratulations also go out to Nick Bussan and Teresa Hill for being nominated for this award.

Drop the pop. Water is cool.
The District 87 Wellness Committee is promoting water as a beverage for the month of May. This is the time when all of us start to spend more time outside, hopefully being physically active. Our children are often involved in sports and need to be reminded to drink water before, during and after exercise. It is important to drink water before you are thirsty because dehydration sets in before you fell thirst.
Our bodies are 75 to 80% water. Our brain is 95% water; our blood is 82% water; our lungs are nearly 90% water. So when we do not drink enough water or become dehydrated, our performance quickly suffers. A 2% loss of body water can cause tiredness, irritability, lack of focus and decreases in physical performance.
For many people, soft drinks have replaced more nutritious beverages such as milk and water. Tired of plain water? Try adding a slice of orange, lemon, lime or cucumber in your water to change it up. Carry a water bottle with you as a reminder to drink up.
So drop the pop - water is cool.

We are approaching the end of the year. Please check that your student does not owe money to the cafeteria. Many district parents are using www.mylunchmoney.com to pay for student meals online with a credit card or debit card. If you have questions about your student’s lunch account, please call your cafeteria manager or call the Food & Nutrition Office at 827.6031, X-227.
