They'll gladly have Adlai Day…too!
After researching Adlai Stevenson's contributions to our state, nation and world, academically talented third through fifth grade students at Oakland School announced, "We'd gladly have Adlai Day" and presented their cause to Mayor Judy Markowitz and members of the City Council. Their efforts last Spring paid off on September 13th when the Bloomington City Council voted unanimously to name Stevenson's February 5th birthdate as Adlai Stevenson II Day. Stevenson was a lifelong Bloomington resident and former Washington School student (see photo - he's in the 2nd row, 7th from left). He later went on to become the Governor of Illinois, the Vice President of the U.S. and an Ambassador to the United Nations. This project was funded by a grant from the McLean County Museum of History and involved the work of Oakland teachers - Shari Cooper, Leslie Frizzell, Josh Oberts and Janenne Scott. A week-long birthday celebration at Oakland is currently in the works! Click HERE to see the student's presentation.

BHS teacher part of Romanian classroom project
In October, BHS social studies teacher, Amanda Van Allen will travel to Romania and tour schools to exchange ideas, teaching methodology and experiences in the field of economic education. During the spring of 2005, Romanian teachers will visit BHS and the other three Illinois partnering schools to "wrap-up" their classroom partnership projects, tour businesses, agricultural and financial institutions, and experience Illinois' Midwestern culture. Van Allen is one of only 4 teachers in the state chosen to take part in this project - which came about through BHS' active participation in the Illinois Global Economics & Finance High School grant program. This partnership involves both the Illinois and National Councils on Economic Education along with their Romanian counterpart. Funding has been provided through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools in coordination with the U.S. Department of State.
