| BJHS student receives kidney transplant Rachel Lovell, an 8th grade student at BJHS and former Bent School student, successfully received a kidney transplant on Monday, September 27th! Lovell has been on a donor waiting list for over a year, but the donor ended up to be someone Rachel has known for most of her life. The donor is District 87 parent, Abbie Soltwedel, whose daughter (also named Rachel) attended Bent School. The surgery was a great success and both Rachel and Abbie are doing remarkably well! If you are interested in keeping up-to-date on Rachel's progress, or would like to leave a message for her, you may do so by clicking HERE. Registration is required to access the site. Once you register, type imalovelltoo to access Rachel's page. Board passes Balanced Budget During the September 22nd Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the 2004-2005 Legal Budget: The Budget: • is projected to be balanced in the Education Fund, Operations and Maintenance Fund and the Transportation Fund. Together, these three funds represent nearly all of the district's yearly expenditures. • represents the first time in three years that the three funds are projected to be balanced at the end of the fiscal year. • shows a $7.5 million deficit in the Fire Prevention-Life Safety Fund, but this figure is misleading since the revenue was obtained through bonds released last year. Expenditures from this fund will be applied towards additional district-wide building upgrades • projects overall revenues of $52.7 million and expenditures of $59.8 million (this amount is somewhat misleading due to the inclusion of $7.0 million in last year's revenue being applied towards this year's Life Safety expenditures). A summary of the Board of Education meeting can be found HERE. United Way Campaign begins During the month of October you have the opportunity to contribute towards the McLean County United Way 2004 Campaign. | District Trivia: Aside from years of service and level of education, District 87 teachers were once paid different wages based on both the grade level they taught and by their gender - with all secondary teachers always earning more than primary teachers and all male teachers always earning more than female teachers. When was the first salary schedule for District 87 teachers adopted that ended the practice of pay based on the two aforementioned criteria? a) 1909 |
