BHS grad named 2005 Principal of the Year for the State of Tennessee
On October 20th, Philip Kiper (BHS '74) was recognized by the Tennessee Department of Education and Commissioner of Education, Lana Seivers, as the 2005 Principal of the Year. Kiper is currently serving as principal of Bledsoe Co. Middle School in Pikeville, TN. Kiper credits District 87 for his success...I would like to thank all of my teachers from Bloomington school system. I feel that I received a quality education from dedicated and caring professionals. My early school days at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in south Bloomington were wonderful. In high school, I was helped and encouraged to pursue a career in education by several teachers. Two of them, Carl Lauer (ret. English) and V.L. Fairfield (ret. Am. History), greatly impacted my decision to become a teacher. Click HERE to read the news release in its entirety.

Our students, staff raise $21,600 for the United Way of McLean County!

District Trivia:
Major J. Gordon Lillie, a 1879 graduate of BHS, was also known as "Pawnee Bill." After graduating from BHS, Lillie ran away from home to the Indian Territory, where he later worked for Buffalo Bill. He eventually left Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to run his own show, known worldwide as "Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show." The show operated from 1888 to 1913 and gained success throughout Europe and the U.S. His former ranch is now known as the Pawnee Bill Ranch site and is operated as a museum by the State of Oklahoma.

Which District 87 elementary/primary school did "Pawnee Bill" attend?

a) Sheridan School (formerly known as the "Number 6 School.")

b) Bent School (formerly known as the "Number 5 School" and later, the "Hawthorne School.")

c) Irving School (formerly known as the "Number 3 School.")

d) Edwards School (formerly known as the "Number 2 School.")

Those who answered correctly won a box of Barnum's Animal Crackers and a pouch of Gold Rocks Nugget Bubble Gum.

The correct answer can be found HERE.

Student success!
BHS' JV Scholastic Bowl Team, captained by sophomore Kristina Warren, placed FIRST at the 28-team Streator Invitational Tournament. BHS was undefeated in the large school pool and defeated Joliet Catholic (with an overtime tie breaker scored by freshman Hunter Fast) and Princeton in the finals. Other participants included sophomores Michael Lieder and Janis Nix, and freshmen Elizabeth Graehling, Jamie Nix, Ivy Bekker and B. Alex Johnson.

BHS senior, Andy Kubiak placed 18th at the IHSA 2AA Boys Cross County meet and earned All State honors for his effort.

Bent students in Kate Hunt's and Mary Ziller's classroom decorated and donated a tree towards the Baby Folds "Festival of Trees." The tree features maroon and gold handmade and hand sewn stars - named after the school's team name, The Superstars.
