|
Bloomington Public Schools receives federal Title I funds that are allocated to four elementary schools. Bent, Irving, and Sheridan schools are school-wide Title I project schools. They receive federal Title I funds to provide additional resources, programs and services for all students in the school. Stevenson School is a targeted assistance school. It receives Title I funds to serve individual students identified as needing additional support. A portion of the district’s Title I funds is used to provide professional development, parent involvement activities, the district Bilingual program and Title I summer school. Parent Involvement Bloomington Public Schools has a parent involvement policy that applies to all students. This policy describes the district’s commitment to working with parents to ensure that all students receive a high quality education. In addition, parents of students in the four Title I schools are asked to join the school principal in signing a Title I Compact that further describes the commitment of the school staff and the families. The No Child Left Behind Act requires that all Title I schools ask parents to sign a Title I compact. No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) The No Child Left Behind Act places specific requirements on all districts that receive federal Title I funds. The requirements fall into two primary categories: Highly Qualified teachers and Adequate Yearly Progress. All District 87 teachers are “highly qualified” for the subjects they teach. This means that they possess the appropriate teaching certification, education and training. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a requirement that schools get an increasing percentage of students to meet or exceed the state learning standards. For the 2006-07 school year, a school will be considered to have made AYP if 55% of all students and each definable subgroup meet or exceed the standards in reading and mathematics. If any group of students has less than 55% meet or exceed the standards, the school will not make AYP. Each year, the AYP requirement will increase until reaching 100% in 2014. For more information about NCLB, access the federal NCLB website.
