Summer School Program

District 87 provides a summer school program for students in grades K - 12.  This 5-week programs provides approximately 72 hours of additional instruction during the summer months.  Students are invited to participate in summer school based on teacher recommendation.  Students at the middle school and high school level may participate in summer school to obtain a passing grade for a course.  In addition, at the high school level, students may participate in summer school to earn credits.

Summer school tuition is currently $200.  This fee helps to defray the costs of running the program including providing transportation.  Scholarships are provided for elementary students from low income families who are recommended for the program.

Bloomington High School Summer School Offerings

Bloomington High School offered summer school coursework through the Illinois Virtual High School program.    Tuition for each BHS summer school course was $200.

Elementary Summer School

Elementary Summer School is a five week program serving students completing grades K – 5.   The program provided students with additional instruction in Reading/Language Arts and Math.  Elementary teachers recommended students to be invited to participate in the summer school program.  The program was free of charge to targeted students based on test scores and free/reduced lunch status.  Other students attended summer school on a tuition basis.  Tuition for the 2007 Summer School program was $200.

The summer school program will be housed at Bloomington Junior High School.  Students will be provided with daily breakfast and transportation. 

Partial funding of the Elementary Summer School program is provided through the Title I grant.

 

Extended School Year (ESY)
Extended School Year (ESY) is a five week program serving students whose Individualized Education Plans (IEP) indicate a need for special education services to extend the school year.  This program run concurrently with the Elementary Summer School program.   Bus transportation is provided.  This program is free of charge.  Decisions about whether a child needs to participate in the Extended School Year program are made by the IEP team.  This discussion typically takes place at the IEP team's annual review meeting.

 

Early Start
Early Start is a three week program serving students at an individual school prior to the start of the school year.  Sheridan Elementary School and Irving Elementary School hosted Early Start programs for their students in the summer of 2007. 

 

Transition Pilot Program
The Transition Pilot Program is a new program designed to help students entering middle and high school prior to the start of the school year.  Bloomington Junior High School and Bloomington High School hosted transition programs for students entering grades 6 and 9.  These programs focused on easing the transition to a new school. 

Program for Summer 2008 will be proposed during the spring semester.  More information will follow.
