On the morning of September 23, 1857, Bloomington High School officially opened its doors for its first group of students. Classes were held on the top floor of the Wilkins Academy, located on the corner of Main and Olive Streets. Under the supervision of Principal J.A. Johnson, subjects taught included: English, Latin grammar, arithmetic, algebra and Parker's philosophy. This building was used for just one year, as BHS moved to the basement of the Christian Church the following fall.
