(Robert) Sidney Smith attended Bloomington High School in the 1890s. He later went on to create the nationally syndicated comic strip, The Gumps. On June 5, 1920, Andy's Dancing Lesson – the first of dozens of animated cartoons about the characters, was released. In 1931, The Gumps became the very first comic strip adapted into a radio show, when Chicago station WGN began broadcasting their adventures.
