The second Edwards School opened on the corner of Allin and Market Streets in 1903 and cost $50,671 to complete. The Edwards School construction was funded by a bond issue that also included the construction costs for a new Emerson and Irving Schools, and an addition to the recently completed Washington School. The bond was approved by the voters on April 6, 1903.
Edwards School, originally called the Number Two School, was named for Dr. Richard Edwards, then President of Illinois State Normal University. Edwards School served our district until 1969, when it was sold to a private investor. It has since burned to the ground. The site is now occupied by the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
