In 1922, a new building was started on the same block as the 1870 Hawthorne School. Midway through its construction, on September 25, 1923, Hawthorne School was renamed for acting business manager, Horatio G. Bent. The act of naming a building after a current district employee was unprecedented and unfollowed since.
Bent School was designed by Arthur Pillsbury.
