Just nine years old at the time, Bloomington High School would be required to double in space to accompany the needs of its students. The school received an addition that would double the size of the school. At the beginning of the 1968-69 school year, BHS underwent the split-shift plan, junior and senior students attend school from 7:30 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. and sophomores and freshmen would attend school from 11:40 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. The schedule was designed to relieve crowded conditions at the junior high school and placed approximately 986 juniors and seniors at BHS during the morning and 1,050 freshmen and sophomores in the building during the afternoon.
