In 1969, racial tension came to a head at BHS. Members of the Afro-American Club were dismayed by the lack of culturally diverse offerings at the school. As a result, BHS' Afro-American Culture Club presented Principal Wheeler with several suggestions. Some of their demands were met. They included: adding a black studies course to the fall curriculum; offering soul food (chitterlings, greens, homony grits, black-eyed peas and corn bread) to the lunch menu; and including a photo of the Afro-American Culture Club for the yearbook. This photo includes members of the 1970-1971 Afro-American Culture Club.
