What are Reading Intervention Services? How does my student qualify for Reading Intervention Services? Reading Strategies:
Reading intervention is a program developed to help students who are struggling with their current reading curriculum. Reading intervention does not replace the reading instruction a student receives in his/her classroom.  Rather, students are pulled for 20-30 minutes a day, in a small group setting, to work on a specific skill. The goal of Reading Intervention is to build confident readers that become  successful students in the general education classroom.

Students are chosen for intervention based on the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills)screening  tool. DIBELS measures the following early reading skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary and fluency. This tool is administered three times per year to all students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

When your beginning reader gets "stuck" on a word, encourage the use of the following strategies. They do not have to be used in order.

Use the picture

Skip the word, read on, go back

Get your mouth ready to say the word

See what you know in the word. Ex. hand, scat

Think about a rhyming word that you know.   Ex. may, say, play

Think about the story. What would make sense?

Try a word, see if it makes sense, sounds right, and looks right.
