BIOLOGY POLICIES

Teacher Expectations

1.     Be in class every day and try your hardest!

2.     Participate in class discussion, labs, etc.

3.     Take class notes.

4.     Keep current with the required reading.

5.     Turn in all assignments on time.

6.     Bring all required materials to class daily.

7.     Study for all tests and ask for additional help from the instructor, if needed, before test day

     Use your vocabulary and note outline as a study and review guide.

8.     Be organized and put forth your best effort.

Grades Evaluation

Grades are based on points accumulated for every graded activity, such as labs, worksheets, tests, etc.  Since a student will always be earning more points a grade can always be improved.  Constant effort must be applied.  Grades are posted on a regular basis to allow students to monitor progress.

    Grading Scale:

            A = 89.5-100%

            B = 79.5-89.4%

            C = 69.5-79.4%

            D = 59.5-69.4%

            F = 59.4% and below

Tests

Tests will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions.  Periodically, there will be lab practicals to assess lab skills.

Re-tests

If a student scores below 70% on a major written test or quiz, within one week of receiving the grade, he/she will meet with the teacher outside of class to review material and schedule a re-test (to be taken outside of class).  The re-test is an equivalent test or quiz and the new score will be an average of the grades for the first and second time taking the test/quiz.

Student Materials Needed

1.       A 1½ inch 3-ring binder/notebook with enough paper for a semester’s work.

      You will take lots of notes!  All handouts are to be kept in your binder/folder.

2.    Pen or pencil.

3.    Colored pencils (at least 12 colors)

Make-up Policy

There is no credit for late work.  If the student has an excused absence, the work can be turned in the next day.  If the student has an extended excused absence, work can be turned in one week from the date of his/her return to school.  Special arrangements will be made to accommodate those who are ill and miss several days/weeks.  It is the student’s responsibility to find out what assignments were missed (not to take place during class) and turn in work by the deadline.  Students missing class for anticipated absences (such as a sporting event) are expected to turn work in by the required deadline.

Student Assistance

Students needing help are encouraged to ask the teacher for assistance.  This may be done before or after school, before or after class, during class (if appropriate), or during a study hall if the student’s and teacher’s schedule permit.  It is best to schedule time with the teacher if possible.  The lesson plans (including assignment due dates & test dates) for the current unit are posted within the classroom and on-line at my website.

Grades are posted periodically within the classroom or may be viewed on the web on Skyward by using the login and password assigned to you by the District 87 Technology Department.  There is a link to information on accessing Skyward grades from home on my webpage.  This will allow you to have an excellent idea as to your progress in class.

There is a variety of information posted on my web page that you will find useful, such as help with how to study and how to read the book.  There are also links to various internet sites posted for each of the topics studied in class.  These provide further reinforcement of topics through review games, interactive movies, etc.
