Student Teacher, Regular and Honors Biology

Hello and welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! My name is Kristen Kopf and I am Laura Bach’s student teacher for Regular and Honors Biology. I am originally from Aurora, IL and am currently a senior at Illinois Wesleyan University. I am very excited to be at Bloomington High School and cannot wait to get started on what I know will be a great semester.

I hope to get to know all of you over the course of the semester and that you will get to know me as well. To help with this goal I would like to tell you a little more about myself starting with my interests. The first is science, of course! Often I find myself in awe of our world and all its quirks, and I appreciate how science attempts to explain its behavior. One of the most beautiful aspects of science is that it is a life endeavor with never ending possibilities. We continually add to our knowledge and never cease to ask questions.

The past two summers I have been fortunate to directly apply my science knowledge and conduct research in the fields of genetics and immunology. In the summer of 2006 I worked at Duke University researching the connection between centromere abnormalities and birth defects. This past summer I worked at the National Institutes of Health researching the Ebola vaccine (scary, I know!), specifically focusing on the T-cell response of two vaccine regimens. If any of you are considering careers in research, or if you just happen to be interested in the topic, I would be more than happy to discuss my work with you.

Outside of academics I enjoy playing waterpolo, where I am goalie for the Illinois Wesleyan women's waterpolo team. Hopefully in the future I will be able to coach waterpolo or track at the high school level. Also, I am an avid reader and cook, love anything outdoors, and enjoy making pottery.

I would love to hear more about all of you. Feel free to contact me at kristenkopf@yahoo.com with questions, comments, concerns, etc. I would also like to hear about any upcoming performances or events that you are participating in so I can come and support you.

Welcome to biology and a wonderful semester!

GO RAIDERS!

I have accepted a teaching position at Elk Grove High School.  I'll be teaching 2 sections of LEP (limited english proficiency) Biology and either 3 sections of Regular or Honors Biology.
