The Lexile framework for reading is a scientific approach to measuring readers and reading material. The Lexile measure reflects the difficulty of a text (book) and also gives an indication of a student's reading ability. Knowing the Lexile measure of a book and also knowing the Lexile measure of a reader helps predict how the book will match with the student's reading ability - whether the book is too easy, too difficult, or just right.

The Lexile measure is a number
followed by an "L" (for example 350L).
The Lexile scale ranges from 200L (beginning reader) to 1700L (advanced
readers).
We use the Lexile framework at Stevenson School to guide students in choosing appropriate reading material in both the classroom and the learning center. We recheck Lexile ranges often and Lexile reports are included with each report card. It is important to understand that Lexile measures do not correlate to grade levels. Within our classroom, we have a wide range of readers and a an equally wide range of reading material appropriate for each Lexile level.
You can help your child by knowing his/her Lexile range. A reader's recommended Lexile range is 50L above and 100L below their Lexile measure. Once you know your child's Lexile measure, you can help connect him/her to thousands of books that have Lexile measures.
Using the Lexile Book Database, you can find
appropriate books and create booklists for your children. You can search
for books by title, author, topic, keywords or Lexile range knowing that the
selections will be appropriate to your child's reading range.
