Radio Speaking

The hardest part about being on speech team, is deciding what event you want to do.  All of the events fall into 2 basic categories: Interpretation and Public Address.  Within each category, most of the events are related to one another, and some even relate to ones outside of their region.  Hears a breakdown of how they all relate.

Interpretation

Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation

These events are the easiest to understand.  You take a section of a play, being humorous or dramatic, or take an already published piece, and just perform it.  You do all the characters, "popping" from one to another.  You do not walk around and you do not have any props.

Humorous and Dramatic Duet Acting

These two events are the ONLY acting events in speech team.  The rest are all interp.  In these, you and a partner take a piece of a play or something and perform it, basically.  There are no pops, you just play the one character.  You move about your area in any way you want with use of a table and two chairs.

Prose and Verse

Books are used in these events.  These events call for preparing 2 pieces, either stories, or poems.  You don't walk around and the focus is in the interpretation and voice.

Public Address

Oratorical Declamation

This event involves performing another person's published speech or essay.  You treat it like a speech and do all the typical aspects of a speech, walking patterns, gestures, etc.

Special Occasion Speaking and Oratory

These are the two big writing events.  So if you enjoy writing persuasive essays, these events are for you.  Basically you write a speech, either being serious (Oratory) or humorous (SOS).  Then you perform it with all the aspects of a speech, walking patterns, gestures, etc.

Original Comedy

The other writing event.  You write what basically is a short story for the purpose of being funny.  It has differing characters, that are separated by pops, but different from HI, you can move around the stage.  This is probably the most open to anything event.

Impromptu Speaking

You get about 2 minutes to prepare a short 6 minute speech about whatever the card they give you is about.  The card will have anything from quotes, to objects, to random people for you to interpret.

Extemporaneous Speaking

Enjoy current events, politics, and foreign relations.  This just may be your thing.  You have 45 minutes or so to research, write, and prepare a 6 minute speech on a topic given to you.

Radio

The event to cure stage fright!  You sit with your back to the judges and present a 5-minute radio broadcast, full of international, national, and local news, sports and weather.  The only event where timing and voice means everything.
