Steps

  1. Open quark, go to file then new.
  2. This size is 11.25 wide, and 13.75 tall. Columns — 5, gutter - .25. All margins .5 except top which is .75.
  3. Draw a picture box starting in the first column and going across the first 4 columns.
  4. In the measurements pallet, make the box 2 inches tall. If you can’t find the measurements pallet, look under the view menu. This will be for your masthead. A masthead is like a logo for the name of the newspaper. You will design the masthead in Adobe Illustrator and then import it into this picture box. It will need to be saved as an EPS format or it won’t work.
  5. Directly below the picture box draw a text box the same width. In the measurements pallet, make it .25 tall. This will hold the date, issue # etc.
  6. Draw a text box directly below the first one. Same 4 columns..75 tall. This is for your first headline. Use the font Francis gothic wide for the headline. Make it at least 36 pts.
  7. Make another text box below the headline. Same 4 columns, 4.25 tall. In the measurements pallet change the columns to 4. This is used for your article text.
  8. Draw a picture box in the middle of the 4 column text box. Make it 1.5 wide, 2 tall. Center it in the middle of the center two columns.
  9. With the picture box selected pull down the item menu and go to frame. Enter the width .5, and close the box.
  10. With the box still selected, go to the item menu and then runaround. Enter 9 points in each space. (This puts an 1/8 inch margin around the outside of the frame.
  11. Use the following items to complete the rest of your paper:
    1. No fewer than 12 graphic elements — photos, clipart, bullets, lines etc.
    2. Original masthead with art and type used to create unique logo
    3. Articles imported from the Internet. Type should be 10 or 12 point times roman for body copy. Spell checked.
    4. The run around or wrap around feature should be used somewhere in your ad other than they picture box above.
    5. Use the top half of the right hand column for teaser box. This is a fancy table of contents with graphics.
    6. ALL GRAPHIC ELEMENTS ON YOUR PAPER SHOULD REFLECT GOOD DESIGN. CREATIVITY IS A MUST!
