Key Terms
- Audio-sound capable of being heard
- Digital-consisting of digital information (ones and zeros) such as .mp3
- Analog-imitation of a sound wave (record, tape)
- Track- contains the information for one instrument
- Mix down-the act of compressing all tracks into one final track or file.
- Loop-a repeating sound
- Podcast-A series of audio or video (shows) you can subscribe to
- Streaming - refers to the delivery method and not the file type. Basically it means you can watch or listen while the file is still downloading.
- encoding - changing files from one format to another. for example from a .wav to an mp3.
Typical Audio formats
- .wav - uncompressed used mostly on CD's
- .mp3 - lower quality than wav but take up much less room due to compression. Currently the most common file format.
- .aac - advanced audio coding is like an mp3, but better quality. Sometimes they are copywrite protected
- .mp4 or m4a - These can contains either audio, video or both but also are capable of streaming
- .aiff - Apple's audio format
- .wma - windows media audio (microsoft's format)
Assignment One - Create an original score (song) using garage band.
- Create a song that is between 2 1/2 to 3 minutes long
- It should have no fewer than 5 tracks and no more than 10
- You need to use both real instruments and software instruments
- Fade the sound down at the end of the song
- Create the mixdown and save the file as an mp3
- Create a new folder in your root folder called "audio"
- Save a copy of your file in this folder and post the file on your website.
Assignment Two - Create a podcast
Follow these steps and Include all of the following parts in your podcast
- You will need to do a little research for this project. Use wikipedia to find information about a subject of your choice. You will need to narrate 3 short paragraphs onto the podcast.
- File>New- new podcast-save in your garage band folder
- There are many ways to import media (songs, pictures, movies etc.) into your podcast. As you bring materials into your podcast, make sure they are placed on the correct track.
- Start with your song from assignment one placing it on the "jingles" track.
- Pics that are in iPhoto can be seen in the media window and dragged onto the podcast track. Pics may also be dragged from and folder or the desktop directly onto the podcast track.
- Record narration on the voice track.
- In addition to your music soundtrack, you need to make an "intro" and an "outro" using at least 2 sound effects.
- When you are finished, go to share>export podcast to disk. Save it in your garage band or multi media folder that's inside your root folder
- Post the podcast on your website.
