DRAW A 3-D COMPASS

Start by drawing a circle, and create the design for the top of the cylindrical object within the circle. Most of your time will be spent drawing the compass in this step. A large portion of your grade depends on this step and the amount of detail you give your compass. The more detail you add, the better your illustration will look when you're done. Create a gradient fill for your compass.

Use the select all command (apple -a) to select everyting in your artwork. Group all the parts (object > group). Use the black arrow to compress the object as shown.

Use the white arrow (direct selection tool) to select the bottom, middle anchor point. It should look like this if you have selected it corretly.

Copy and past the line segment twice. Remove the fill and position the lines as shown below. Note that I have made the lines thicker so you can see them better. Don't do this to your art.

Use the pen tool to connet the two end points and close the path.

Finally use the gradient fill in reverse to give the compass a 3 dimensional look. Notice that I removed the stroke for the final product.
