Techniques: Creating Eyeballs

1.

Lets start out by creating a new 400 pixel x 400 pixel image. File > New and then fill in the values. I'm using a white background and you need to choose a color for your eyeball (I'm going to use a blue color).

Make a new layer

Using the marquee selection tool, create a perfect circle (hold down your shift key while dragging). The circle should be centered in the window. Now fill it with the eyeball color you chose.

Notice that the circle is still selected.

Pull down the select menu and go to "save selection" call it CIRCLE.

2.
Now leave the circle selected and go to filter/noise/add noise. Use the settings of 50 for the amount, Distribution-Uniform, and check the Monochromatic box.

Now deselect the circle (Ctrl+D)

Go to filter/blur/radial blur and use the settings of Amount 100, Blur Method-Zoom, and Quality-Best, after you run this filter run it once more at these settings. You should now have something that resembles the image I have here.

3.
Now it's time to find our eyeball out of this image. Go to SELECT and LOAD SELECTION. Pick the channel called "circle"

Now go to SELECT again and inverse the selection.

Hit the delete key

IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND TARGETING, click the following link to learn about targeting. Targeting

4.

  • Go to load selection again (same circle)
  • Now go to Select > Modify > Border. Type in 12 pixels. This changes the selection to a ring shape. Use the paint bucket to fill the ring with black.
  • Deselect.
  • Now go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur and set for 4.
  • Finally, target the background layer and select the white pixels using the magic wand. Target the shade layer and hit the delete key.

5.

  • Make a new layer. Call it highlight 1
  • Target the background layer and select the blue pixels.
  • Now target the highlight 1 layer.
  • While holding down your "option" key we are going to minus part of the selection. Minus the selection so you only have a small wedge left in the upper right corner.
  • Once the wedge is created, fill it with white.
  • deselect
  • guassian blur 4

6.

  • Make a new layer. Call it highlight 2
  • Paint a little white paint on the lower left hand part of the eye.
  • guassian blur it.

7.

  • Make a new layer. Call it pupil
  • Using the marquee selector, draw a circle for the pupil.
  • fill it with black
  • guassian blur it
8.
That's it! All I did to finish my eye up was to add one more highlight and add a white spec to the pupil.
