DRAWING AN ISOMETRIC GEAR

You can use this procdure to create isometric views of circular objects like this clock gear.

Draw a perfect circle (hold down the shift key)

Switch to outline view (view > outline) and use the pen tool to make a single anchor point at the top (slightly above) your circle. Use the rotation tool to rotate and copy the single anchor point around the circle. Use 22.5 degrees.

Using the two anchor points, draw the gear tooth as shown in step 2.

Switch back to preview (view > preview) Move the tooth so that it overlaps into the circle.

Select the tooth and rotate the tooth and copy using the same setting as before (22.5 degrees)

Continue to copy the tooth (apple - D) until it goes all the way around the circle.

Next use the pathfinder to add the shape together. Click the top left hand icon and then click "expand"

Make a small circle in the center of the gear and use the align tool to center the two shapes.

Use the pathfinder tool again. This time use the subtract icon and then "expand"

Color the gear black

.

Copy the gear (edit > copy)

Paste the gear (edit > paste). Fill the top gear with a light gray and position as shown below.

Finally, use the handles to make the gear look like the one below.
